Abstract — The major concern for hospitals and blood centres today is patient safety, minimal wastage of medical supplies and minimization of human errors. Several traditional healthcare processes, such as the blood-handling process, in many hospitals involves a number of manual steps with high probability of human mistakes. To ensure absolute quality of services, more and more hospitals and blood banks now require modern and advanced solutions to provide high levels of accuracy, automation and reliability.

ONE OF THE MOST PROMISING TECHNOLOGIES that can modernise existing health care services is Radio Frequency Identification - RFID. By offering unique identification of items, automatically, in real-time, combined with an programmable environment for building easily high-level services, RFID technology leads to increased processes reliability, decreasing cost. This paper discusses a novel RFID blood bank management system, developed using an Open development platform. The system is modular and structured as a service-orientedarchitecture and it aims to reduce the number of transfusion errors as well as blood product waste. Finally, it was demonstrated in a real deployment in Argos hospital, in Greece, using real data.
