C-MONITOR :A Cost-Effective Solution for Personalised Patient Compliance Monitoring

TEN Telecom 2002/2

The objective of the envisaged project is to validate the market concerning the provision of an integrated service aimed at monitoring patient compliance to therapy.

The service will allow patients, and notably patients suffering from chronic diseases, such as heart failure, diabetes etc, to organise daily activities with respect to therapeutic needs in a personalised and friendly manner, in order to assist them in improving their compliance to therapy and interactive communication with their physicians. Patients at home can be reminded about important therapeutic actions (medication, exercises, etc.), they can report in-house examination results, request disease-specific information, log symptoms, and thus support and enhance their compliance to therapy.

At the same time, the responsible physician is always informed, no matter where he is, not only about the patient's condition but also about patient compliance to therapy and possible deviations. Physicians can create the personalised patient therapeutic schema, taking into account the medical history of the patient. In case that the patient does not report, or the examination measurements are out of the accepted range, an alarm is generated and distributed to the responsible physician. The real-time access to medical information and related data from electronic patient record results in a cost-effective management of healthcare resources. Physicians will work in an efficient way during the rounds at wards and patients will gain from better diagnosis due to shorter response times and more qualified analysis.

Since the system is designed to be easily ported to and implemented in different European countries, the tests and validation tasks will take place in a wide geographical area, namely: Greece, Spain and the UK. These countries constitute samples of different cultures and healthcare systems, and this will help to assess the validity of the chosen market approach. In addition, it will contribute to develop strategies for the wide geographical expansion intended.
