Designed by microbiologists for microbiologists

This dedicated module was developed after consulting bacteriologists worldwide, and carefully identifying their needs, and was designed to overcome the deficiencies perceived to exist in other software packages for managing bacteriology laboratories.

TD-Synergy Microbiology module allows the technologist and pathologist to make optimum use of their knowledge and experience, both to follow the best course of action, and to reach the right conclusions.

To guarantee a high level of quality and security, the multi-step processing is supported by a full audit system to track each action and query appropriately.

User interface

Because bacteriology results are generally in free or coded text form, fast reliable result entry is not as easy as with numerical results. In addition, the processing requirements for bacteriology investigations are different from those of most other laboratory disciplines.

In bacteriology, the final result is often reached after several stages of analysis, each stage requiring differing techniques and taking variable periods of time. Hence, an essential prerequisite for the TD-Synergy microbiology module was to be able to adapt the process in keeping with observations at each stage of the examination/test cycle, while integrating the results of each stage to build a coherent picture.

Our software solution also gives the technologist and pathologist the opportunity to make optimum use their know-how to take the correct action and reach the right conclusions. A dedicated expert system is also included to help in this task.

Infection control

Hospital-acquired infections have been identified as responsible for a large number of deaths in the world. The most efficient way to reduce the spread of this type of infection is to improve hygiene practices in the hospital.

Real-time information is essential in the fight against the spread of hospital-acquired infections. The TD-Synergy Microbiology module includes a real-time alert mechanism that allows the user to trigger a “nosocomial flag” based on identification of the organism (e.g. Acinetobacter baumanii ) and the duration of the patient in the hospital (e.g. detection 48 hours after hospitalization). This alert can be transmitted automatically to the hygiene control services of the hospital (e.g. C.L.I.N. in France, NNIS in the USA) and updated in real time.

The early availability of such alerts by the laboratory enables hygiene control staff to take appropriate and immediate action to control the spread of the infection inside or outside the hospital.

In addition, the availability of a patient’s history of infection can generate a flag when a patient, newly admitted to the hospital, has previously been in contact with a specific organism (e.g. MRSA) and could be a potential, even healthy, carrier of the infection.

Our epidemiology module, associated with this microbiology module, provides a powerful tool to follow the resistance of organisms to multiple antibiotics and to track how resistance evolves. It can also be used to monitor the occurrence of hospital-acquired infections in the various locations inside the hospital.
